The objective of current development and reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan is to help build a stable, democratic and prosperous country that contributes to regional and global security. The Afghan government is working with international partners to address the country’s immediate and long-term needs in areas as diverse as health, education, governance, policing, agriculture and infrastructure rehabilitation. This paper provides an overview of these activities and situates Canada’s commitments – amounting to $1.2 billion from 2001 to 2011 – within the larger context of international assistance.
