The International Committee of the Red Cross has gradually been scaling back assistance activities in Afghanistan with the improvement of harvests, increased commerce and a greater involvement of organizations active in long-term reconstruction projects. Security constraints also hamper operations in many areas. Nevertheless, the ICRC continues to provide support for selected hospitals and for six physical rehabilitation centres largely devoted to helping landmine victims. The institution also runs programmes to highlight the dangers posed by unexploded ordnance and rehabilitates water and sanitation services.
